Additional Steampunk Programs

Postby Capt. Brennan on Sun Mar 29, 2009 4:30 pm

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Anime Central has a Steampunk category in their costume contest this year. There are some anime fans who have drifted into the online Steampunk community to get ideas and feedback. I am sure many of you who are on the Anime communities have known about this for awhile.

This and the fact that the call has gone out over the DiashoCon twitter for panel ideas has me wondering if there is interest in more Steampunk programming. If so, what would people like to see?

The trouble is that those of us on the Steam Century cast are up to our eyeballs in work during our events, so it is difficult for us to host panels and workshops on game day. We certainly don't bill ourselves as the arbiters of all things Steampunk either and it would be nice to hear what other people have to say.

What would you like to see? Is there anything you would like be a part of?

I would love to go to steampunk stuff, but I really don't know enough to lead or inform.

Sounds like it'd be cool... I know zip about Steampunk, but it'd be cool to learn a few things. :D

One big help would be making contact with costumers who might be willing to host a panel or demonstration. I am sure a number of you are going to Anime Central. Would someone volunteer to talk to the entrants/winners of the steampunk costume awards?

Jewelry making and toy gun modification are also very popular among the steampunk crowd. Demonstrations or even a "bring your own materials, we supply paint/wire snips and advice" session might be an idea. Do we have anyone who does Nerf gun mods or makes jewelry?

I don't do either of the things you brought up specifiably, although I am a costumer and know something about steam-punk if you guys need help with any panels I'm running a few anyway. We could ask Heather Luca, if she's coming this year. She was the one in the artist alley selling the steam punk clothes and accessories.

Heather actually held a scavenger hunt token for us last year. We should see her at ConVergence (if not at No Brand Con) and I can talk to her to see what she would like to do. It is tough if she will be vending again and won't have someone else to help cover that while she is presenting.

There are also films. Small ones might be easier to get permission for.
Vidocq was not released widely in the US (it is a French film)
Perfect Creature is from New Zealand
Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello is an animated short film that you can find on Youtube, I believe it is also from New Zealand

What kinds of materials are you working with?

There is a steampunk lantern on Instructables that might help: http://www.instructables.com/id/Steampu ... D-lantern/

As for building, I really recommend just spending time going through the results when you search Steampunk on Instructables. Here is a handy link.

We use Rub 'n Buff for a lot of props (Yes, the name is hilarious). It is essentially bits of metal in a paste wax. Here is a link with pictures: http://www.bigceramicstore.com/supplies ... bnBuff.htm
You can find it in craft stores.

As for "nice," I'm not sure what sense you mean that, but don't think something has to look clean and neat. If your character has used this thing forever, it will look beat up. We actually spend more time making props look well cared for and used than we do finding them.
