Remember, you also have video games, comics, sci-fi, etc. at your disposal
I tried to get my friend to do this:
purple shorts or sweatpants, Green shirt, and these:
maybe even one of those fake muscle shirts underneath for good measure.
If you're looking for something based around anime.... I'll let Cheesus or Nick make a recommendation.

Oh oh! I know! Cosplay L! Nick Izumi really looooooves L. He loves them so much he likes to chase after/beat them!
Seriously though, if your nervous about cosplaying I recommend just throwing together an outfit of your favorite clothes. I've seen from wearing nothing but a too small towel and bunny ears, to guy with 1ft platform shoes and glowing spikes on thier pants. Pretty much everything goes.
