Favorite Zelda game?

Postby Neko Toast on Sun May 17, 2009 10:51 pm

I dunno, I've been in a Zelda mood again, and I was wondering which game you liked the most.

I can figure that most people are going to say Ocarina of Time (myself included), so I'll exclude it from the poll so that the other games have a better chance.

Feel free to discuss the franchise as well.

I dunno.... I've gotten really bored with Zelda games lately. I know they tried to shake up the franchise with Wind Waker, and we finally got the Dark Zelda game with Twilight Princess.... but it's still the same basic story. Zelda get kidnapped. Link fight Ganon (or minion thereof) and saves her. Meh. I'm bored.

We need a GOOD new Starfox game, and a 2.5D remake of Super Metroid for the NDS.

Or....
Maybe Nintendo could actually come up with a new franchise....?
Nah.

Gotta go with A Link to the Past. I would choose that one over Ocarina of Time any day.

@ Alhon: Pikmin and Animal Crossing would like a word with you. But I know what you mean...especially with the Wii. I think the only new franchise they've done is Wii Music which was...well...lame. And I agree: Starfox needs a GOOD new installment. None of this running around on the ground sh.it

if you are any sort of fan an avid gamer you gotta say link to the past its the classic and by far the best of them. I rarely if ever play threw a game a second time and I've played threw that game at least 10 times.

To be completely honest, I don't like Twilight Princess a whole lot. Sure, it was a darker game with adult link, but there was too much going on. It's like they were trying to make an entirely different storyline, featuring only Midna and Zant, and someone at Nintendo said "We have to throw in Zelda and Ganondorf too, otherwise it's not a Zelda game!" It literally feels like Zelda and Ganondorf were thrown into the mix at the last second. They don't get a lot of scenes, they don't have any character development... They're just out of place.

Not to mention the game seems to be trying to be like OoT in every way possible. Same map, same races, a lot of the same dungeons (with the exception of a few, ie Temple of Time dungeon, City in the Sky, Twilight Realm). You've got your Forest Temple (didn't even bother to change the names), your fire place, your water place, your ice place, and your desert place.

I did like the Twilight storyline a lot, though. Midna and Zant were great characters. THey should have had their own separate game, and then Zelda and Ganondorf can have their own lather-rinse-repeat game.

That aside, I believe that Wind Waker was a better game. It was the same characters, Zelda and Ganondorf, but it was so different from the other games. It was almost refreshing. Most people hated it because of the cartoon art style, and yet those characters had more facial expressions than TP ever did (God, Zelda is always stone-faced in TP). They had better development, too. Wind Waker Ganondorf is by far my favorite of the Ganondorfs. The exploring factor was much bigger, too. The map was huge, and there were tons of islands to check out. It wasn't a slightly modified map like in TP.

The one issue I had with WW was that sleezy butthole Tingle. 398 rupees to decipher one chart... It's a monopoly! He would still be in jail if it wasn't for me, and still no discount? Pfft.

To sum up, Twilight Princess was a good game, but there are better ones out there.

Twilight Princess is honestly my favorite, even over Ocarina. Couple reasons.

A:Art Style. The atmosphere of the game was beutiful. No Zelda game matches it(even counting in the graphics of the time that game came out)

B: Dual Hook Shots.(The game has been out for several years, screw spoilers at this point.)

C: Navi is annoying as an emo kid crying he can't get his hair right.

D: Characters, This game had more involved characters.

E: The cool sword moves were a good innovation.

F: Midna. She stil ranks as one of my favorite characters ever.

G: The game had the same atmospheric feel/darkness level as The chronicles of pridain(The black Cauldron etc.), which is perfect.

Wii controls allow for more fluid dungeons like the sky temple.
Given that I would never live that down, I made a wisecrack instead. "Do you have a little white dress? I've had this deep-seated nurse fantasy about you, Murphy."

I 100% agree with the ones I bolded, excluding Zelda and Ganondorf in D.

A: I personally preferred the graphics of Wind Waker, but that's my personal opinion.

As for E, though they were pretty cool, I think Minish Cap utilized it first. It wasn't completely original. Not that this matters.

Letter G: They did get the dark feel down with the visuals. Not so much with the music, depending on the scene.

Letter H: We didn't own a Wii when it came out, so I was stuck with the Gamecube version. That, and I don't think I'll ever like that dungeon, aside from its boss.

Im holding out my vote because Ocarina of Time should be on this list. But if I had to pick, my vote would go to Twilight Princess. While I liked alot of the pre-Ocarina titles alot, Ocarina was the only one that ever really pulled me into the atmosphere and world of Hyrule and Twilight Princess has been the only game since that has achieved that kind of pull for me.

Plus I absolutely hated Wind Waker and thought it went in almost all of the wrong directions with the franchise.

I'm saying Wind Waker was my favorite with Link to the Past being my second.

I think Wind Waker was brave in it's creation and it definitly delivered. I really enjoyed the art style and I think this might be the first LOZ game with humor in it. The sailing never detracted from the gameplay and I think the plot stands apart from the rest in that Link's sister is kidnapped, not Zelda. In fact, Zelda kicks butt in this one.

I haven't played through all of the Zelda games, but it's my impression that Wind Waker stands apart form the rest in these aspects.

Seconded. It's the first game where Zelda actually fights back. Also the first game where we get to see the King of Hyrule.

Sephiroth, I didn't include it because that game is considered one of the greatest games of all time to a lot of people. It has its own special spot in the gaming world, so it doesn't necessarily need to be included in the poll. If it's that much of a problem, I can add it in.

Also, I will respect your opinion on Wind Waker... if you did play the game. I don't appreciate people who hate the game without trying to play it.

I tried playing Wind Waker but I couldnt stomach through the full thing, much like how I couldnt play through the abortion known as Super Mario Sunshine. Alot of things from the gameplay gimmics to the art style just didnt mesh with my opinion of what the Zelda franchise should be. Nintendo has one-too-many super kiddy cartoon franchises already, Zelda does not and should not need to be one of them. The art style for Wind Waker is one of my main gripes against the game, it was too much of a jump from the mature Link we saw in Ocarina/Majora's Mask and the game came out when cell-shaded games were the fad of the industry (probably an eerie forshadow of Nintendo giving in to any gimmic that will give them more cash) and it dissapointed me to see one of the most respected franchises delve into it. The gameplay was very 'meh' for me and the story itself just never intrigued me the same way that Link to the Past/Ocarina/Majoras Mask did.

Actually I never finnished Wind Waker, mostly for one reason. I spent hours traveling around the entire map, mapping every square (at the time i was a little confused) and this was near the beginning of the game, so I didn't have much. However, I quit for a while because I had no idea what to do. Later I decided to go back to it and found out my game had somehow became corrupted. Out of anger I put it on the bottom of my game stack and forgot about it for a loooong time. >.> I'll probibly pick it back up if i find some time.
