Alright. I feel like getting some of this out of my system, seeing as I've been rewatching the series, and I've been cooped up all day with no one to really talk to.
Now that I've passed the first season, and starting to dive into the second one, I've been noticing a lot of things that bug me about the original series. First off, the Wrath story arc. Seeing it again, I now realize how much of a broken record it was. They're always talking about how the brat isn't human, and always bringing up the same gorram reasons. This goes on for a good 3 or 4 episodes, so it gets tiring quite fast.
This only lead me to a more stunning realization about some of the characters. You see, since Brotherhood has come out, I've been diving deeper into the plot of the manga, and I've gotten to know some of the characters better. So, here's my first thing -- Edward is too emotional, as far as comparing him to the manga plot goes. Sure, he still gets angry a lot, but as far as having those sad moments, he's a lot tougher in the manga. He keeps up the persona of the stronger brother, mostly for the sake of Alphonse and those around him. Altogether, he just seems much more mature in the manga, despite Alphonse being much more so still.
Speaking of which, let's talk about Winry. I never liked her in the series. She would get upset at the drop of the hat, and it happened often. In the manga, however, she also is a much stronger individual. She expresses her tom-boyish attitude a lot better. I actually like her character. She's a much more enjoyable person.
Two other characters to mention quick before I move on - Maria Ross and Barry the Chopper. Maria seemed to nag way too much in the series, for silly reasons. "These boys need to be protected!" Yeah, well, what are you gonna do if Scar shows up? Alchemists don't even stand a chance against him, what makes you think your pistol will? On Barry the Chopper - he's less of a creeper and more of a comic relief ploy in the books, which I love. They never meet him when he's human, which only adds to the laughs, because during the AlxBarry fight, he becomes very offended when Al says he's never heard of him. Barry also plays a bigger role, so we see him more often, thus we have more laughs in the process.
On to bigger things. A big plothole (or at least a weak plot point) I want to talk about is post-Hughes business. In the series, the case is suspended, and Roy Mustang, the poor guy's best friend, shows little effort in investigating the murder. Now we look at the books. Not only does his death screw with the Colonel's life and well-being (he loses sleep and weight by over-investigating), but the police force frames and convicts Maria Ross for the crime without a trial. Not only does this fully display the corrupted tendencies of the military, but it makes a lot more sense. Any real military wouldn't drop a murder case of someone of his rank so quickly. Hughes lived a short life in the books, only making it to about the fourth manga. He was more of a plot device than a character, and though I love the guy to death, he's better suited to be that.
This is more nit-picking than anything, but has anyone ever noticed how many times characters say "Philosopher's Stone" in the series? The whole point of it is that it's a legend, and rarely spoken of. So why is it that everybody and their brother seems to know about it? It's a little ridiculous.
All in all, though I still enjoy the series, I must say that the enjoyment has declined over time, now that I know more of the original plot. It's well-written and more thought out, and the characters are more likeable.
I'm sure my rant broke your heart, Nick, but you haven't given the original plot a real chance it seems.
