How about some variety?

Postby Rocky61287 on Wed May 27, 2009 8:56 pm

I was at last year’s Daisho Con and it was great! I had a blast, but I did notice on thing. Would it be possible to start changing some things up for the tournaments for this year; I mean that Halo 3 is alright but it isn’t the best shooter I’ve ever played. Why not Halo 2 or even Halo those are both pretty good in their own ways as well. Also why not more fighting games, it’s not like we have to stick to the new gen systems. Eternal fighters, Fatal Fury, Street fighter, these are all great games that are on old gen systems that are easy to get a hold of for tourneys; also why not sports, like NFL Blitz for the Nintendo 64, or NBA Jam for the Sega Genesis. I believe that gaming is going downhill these days seeing repeats on old worn out concepts. Who really wants to see that last standing solider with nothing to lose fight off another zombie, or alien race to save the world with his shot gun again? I mean this was alright for Bruce Campbell for so many years in the Evil Dead Trilogy, but let’s get rid of the generic spit up that Halo and Rock Band has been force feeding us for the past some odd years for tournaments. I could think of some ways to make this aspect of the Con better or not a repeat of at least last year’s con even though it was not a bad set up, but who likes doing the same thing over and over again anyways?

First off, change the display picture. It is way too big.

Second, we have been discussing possible tournaments for the upcoming convention quite often in our meetings. I can't promise anything quite yet, as not much is final right now, but you'll probably see a little more variety this time around.

Let me just add this...

Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 is hitting Live next month. If we don't have a MvC2 tournament, I will be crying very large Alhon tears.
Which doesn't happen often. :)

If Daisho has no such tournament, and you cry such very large tears, I vow to bring you large marvel and capcom character shaped cookies to cheer you up Alhon.

alright avatar is changed, and that's all just fine and dandy; but the fact is they need tourney's that will work within each other. You can't have all next gen tourneys, because if you do that your also taking the chance that the tourneys will run into each other like it did with the smash brothers tourney; where most people just got up and left the room anyways.

Creepy Micheal Jackson is creepy. 0.o

But again, I agree with Rocky. Scheduling/strict enforcing of being IN THE GAME ROOM during your tournament should be upheld. Little bit of an issue with that. I know it kinda got out of hand, but still.

my friend the next gen tourneys are the games that are popular and draw people... thats why conventions choose them.. its that simple.. we have many older games available.. tourney setup can be done by anyone.. but we only have so much time for hosting tournaments. we cannot host every oddball game out there

I know that the next gen's are where a lot of popularity has grown, and that's fine. Though saying something is easy to do is also taking the easy way out even though it may not be the best way out. I mean the original street fighter games on the super Nintendo where great, and would be a great game to hold a tourney with. Or cruising usa with the Nintendo sixty four that was a fun racing game too that is easy to put together for a racing game. Games use to be about the game play, not about how great the graphics are. The more we're seeing games today, is the more we see bad games with great graphics. I grew up in the generation that stays true to the old and accepts the new. I'm sure there's a large enough fan base that you can get more of the old gen system tourneys to occur. I mean there are more adults that go to this con than children. Let’s shoot back into the past a little for them so that they can enjoy their roots of where most of the new games get their ideas from.

who said this was easy!? its isn't easy.. we do what we can.. but you have to run what is popular... its just the way it works.. I'm sorry you don't like that. And your preaching to the choir about old school games vs. next gen. I have made this argument many times. But you do what you HAVE to do.

I think we had a pretty good variety of tournaments last year:

1. Soul Calibur 4
2. Mystery Game (pokemon snap)
3. Daisho Smash (N64, melee, and brawl)
4. COD 4
5. Halo 3
6. Mario Kart Wii
7. Megaman 9 Speed Run
8. DDR
9. Battle of the Rock Bands

Some old, some new, fighting, racing, a speed run, rythm based, etc.
Spittin' is a nasty habit...

I didn't say that I didn't like it. You said it was simple. Not I. All that I'm saying is that their is a way where you can have both the old and the new coexsist. Why are you so testy to get on me for that? Otherwise I'll just stop acknowledging you.

Rocky, you must understand that the Daisho staff are strong, in will but not in numbers. They simply do not have the manpower to host both the very popular (next gen) and the other popular. Don't get me wrong, if they were to find time to be able to put such a tourny in, I'm sure they would. I'm sure that you Rocky are welcome to start up your own tourny if you so choose. Believe me, they want to make this the best convention they can. But with time constraints, you have to satisfy the many before the lesser many.

That's fine, but there's still the matter that most of those games where on the previous gen syestems or next gen systems. Theirs two that are on the old gen if you count smash brothers. I mean its not like you can't use other systems to run either.
