You obviously never read Watership Down(serious and Dark commentary on Communism through Bunny Rabbit Society). Bunnies are deadly serious.(Thats only about half sarcasm) I think it's meant to be humorous. Plus the murder of innocent bunny babies is less graphic than people but still impactful, making the villains seem evil while staying below a certain line.
