Lightsaber duels

Postby Langland on Mon Nov 24, 2008 4:35 pm

Has anyone here ever notice that like in majority of all lightsaber duels on Star Wars? They were won by simply cutting off the other guy's hand off. I know there are exceptions but there are some similarities. Like The first duel between Obi-Wan and Vader(ep. 3), Vader lost both his legs and his other arm. With Darth Maul granted he stabbed Qui gon but Obi-Wan then chopped him in half hence chopping something off which was his upper half. I know Grevious lost 3 of his hands before he was shot to death.

The only duels i can think of that were excepts was the 2nd Vader v. Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan and Dooku on ep. 2., Yoda and Dooku, and Yoda and Darth Sidious.

Just so you know, I choose to keep Clone Wars out.

Well yeah, but the lightsaber usually gets lost in the process, disarming to save the hero, or the heros image.
Given that I would never live that down, I made a wisecrack instead. "Do you have a little white dress? I've had this deep-seated nurse fantasy about you, Murphy."

In any type of combat, it is usually preferable to disarm the opponent and have him at your mercy than to kill him.... you can get information out of him that way. But the slashing nature of the lightsabers really favor fighting to remove a limb. Remember the boffer fighting? How many times did people call out "Hand" when they were slapped across the knuckles? If you had a lightsaber, fight's over right there.

Also, losing a hand hurts a lot. ;)

Do lightsabers hurt, or do they cut all nerves. I'd guess most of the pain would be from burns in close proximiy to the technically painless wound.

They cut the nerves, yes, but it still would be as if a person would have their hand lopped off at a sawmill or something. It would really hurt for a few seconds as the blade is slicing it, and I'm sure those nerves are even more scarred by the cauterization that happens immeadiately afterwards.

Another interesting rule of Star Wars is that a blue lightsaber cannot be used to defeat a major villain unless its wielder is pitted against another blue lightsaber user.

^^ Nope, I call BS.

Obi-Wan Kenobi beat Darth Maul in Ep. 1 with a blue saber.

As the Sci-Fi Mod guy, it is my solemn duty to call BS on your calling of BS.

Obi-Wan used Qui-Gon's lightsabre, which is green, to bisect Darth Maul.

As for the chopping off of limbs and things, it's pretty typical fare for lightsabre combat. In Star Wars lore, the Jedi/Sith practice various forms of sabre combat, many of which focus on disarming the opponent. At least in Jedi circles, disarming is the main goal. The Sith like the added bonus of maiming someone, as well, and probably wouldn't stop with just a hand...

Most descriptions and portrayals of being maimed by a lightsabre suggest great pain is involved. The wound is cauterized, but that's still a nasty burn. For most cases, anyway. There is still that bloody arm in the first movie...and with that display of geekery, I am off to bed.

Tom beat me to it.

It was that scene that inspired me to think up this "theory."
