NINTENDO 64 ISNT OLD SCHOOL

A place to openly complain.

The controller is the best thing about the 64 in multiplayer games. And let me tell you why. I'm really used to the controls and can ease into most games on the 64 (except Resident Evil, which i still have a hard time getting the hang of the controls for the old ones), and when playing against those who havent played in a while or in so long, the awkward controller works to my advantage. Thats my selfish reason for loving the N64 controller design.

Hold on. I have to say something here. Actually the Genesis is the successor of the Sega Master System. Now the Sega Master System competed with the NES during the NES's reign in the late 1980's. I just needed to say that.

Actually your right I forgot about the master system and globbed both systems together on accident. Hey I know my history fairly well but I'm not perfect.

I do think one's perspective plays a large role. For me personally, N64 is old school because a lot of time has passed since I played with one. I've moved on to other things, and the proverbial greener pasture.

I think there needs to be a better classification of video game eras. What's next gen today will be old school in a decade. Or less, who knows?

As is oldschool. It is a flashy buzz word. And they are next gen in the same way we are in a post modern society. The GCN XBox Ps2 generation was really when gaming kicked off, therefor it is the start to the mainstreaming of gaming. I cannot think of a better analogy than post modern to next gen.

Seriously, who ever said that the N64 is oldschool? Whoever came up with that notion needs to be slapped upside the head for having a wrong opinion.

That totally contributes to the argument.
Argh I hit what I disagree with. It's a completely logical viepoint coming from me and the rest of thee 22-23 year old members. The 64 hit stores when were in elementary school and most of us are near done with college, that's a long time for us. Considering the differences in personality me, Wheelie, and Couchmaster have had since then(we all knew each other as of grade 6) It's a good majority of our personality development away. the 64 was my first console.
Combined with my previous argument about it and the ps1 defining gaming as it is today, it easily qualifies as oldschool.

Thank you, Alhon. I was just reading the posts on this thread, and I was very, very tempted to go fish that up myself.

I agree with Tom. It's very much a matter of perspective and (often) age based bias. Just like when my dad says he misses the 'good old days' meaning the eighties because of his love of all things horribly technofied and decked out in neon non-matching colour schemes, and my grandfather talks about the 'good old days' being the days growing up in the czech countryside, when being called 'Adolf' carried no negative connotation.

Gaming Timeline:

Golden Age 1970-1974
Arcades

First Gen - 1972-1976
Magnavox Odyssey, Atari Pong

Second Gen - 1977 - 1984
Atari 2600/5200, Magnavox Odyssey, Intellivision, Nintendo Color TV Game

Third Gen - 1985 - 1989
Nes, Sega Master System, Atari 7800

Fourth Gen - 1990 - 1994
Turbo Grafx-16, Sega Genesis, Neo Geo, Super Nintendo

Fifth Gen - 1995 - 2000
Sega Saturn, Sony Playstation, Nintendo 64

Sixth Gen - 2001 - 2005
Sega Dreamcast, Sony PS2, Nintendo Gamecube, Microsoft Xbox

Seventh Gen - 2005 - Today
Nintendo Wii, Sony PS3, Microsoft Xbox 360

I know I didn't put up all the systems, just some of the major ones.
If you look at the Generations, the 64 is only three old and in the total Gen of 7 its not that old, but from the perspective of someone which had it as there first experience with games I could see it as old, but the labeling needs to be offical

1-3 Gen = Old School
1-4 Gen = Classic
5-6 Gen = Dated????

5-6 Gen needs a label, but I don't beleive Old School(If we are trying to be offical) fits it much.

Thats what I've been trying to say!

it has nothing to do with my perspective of the games its the gaming industry itself's perspective. its not that old.

Maybe you could go with Neo-Old School?

Just a thought.

ok Aminar is completely correct.. its all based on perspective. 50's and 60's rock and roll is called "oldies" correct? So if we consider that to be fairly old music when its practically brand new compared to the history of music overall. I'm saying that you just don't want to consider it old because you think that its new... but consider that the history of video games is only about 40-35 years old and N64 is already 15 years old.. i think its safe for some to consider it old school.
