NINTENDO 64 ISNT OLD SCHOOL

Postby DeadSid on Sun Jun 07, 2009 11:44 am

Oldschool is considered anything prior to 3d polygons. They used pixels to create sprites and when polygons were introduced into systems with the nintendo 64 and playstation they were the first next gen systems. Before that the only difference between the systems was an up in the bittage of each of the systems. Next gen systems extend to the dreamcast, playstation 2 and xbox. The New gen systems are the 360, wii, and ps3. They pioneered new technology witch warranted the change in their generation. 2 of the systems being powerful enough to be considered computers while the other used a brand new control style. Old school is old but it doesn't make it original that's what Old school is about. The old bit systems were the firsts in gaming.

Yeah, I wouldn't call N64 old school, either. I got one of those in middle school. It's not that old.

I think a better word would be "classic". It was a very memorable system.

To me, Old School is SNES/Genesis... maybe Neo Geo and older. REAL Old Schools is Atari and NES.

At least, that's my take on it.

I could almost agree with that but genesis came out very close to the same time as nes not snes. the real OGs are intelivision, Atari 2600 and Colecovision. Gaming really started during the second generation of gaming units with these systems.

64 is primitive enough to be oldschool. The fact is that right now old school in gaming is really anything without 60+ FPS. That's really the biggest distinction.
Of course 64 hit when I was in 5th grade, thats a hue difference for me, and anybody my age. Maybe for old folks like you it isn't but time is on a sliding scale centered around how old we were. when something happened. The younger we were the further away it was because time goes slower in childhood. Therefor my old school is different from yours because I'm 3 years younger.

Wait, whoever said that the N64 was old school?

I've never heard anyone claim that before.

dude its not old school by any means.

its like saying tupac was old school rap. NO! Grandmaster flash that's oldschool

its like saying stone cold steve austin was old school wrestling. NO! Hacksaw jim dugen was.

Old school is a term of respect you give the beginnings of something great! in this case gaming. sorry no its not a measurement of your lifespan.

It's perspective Sid. For me that was the beginning of my gaming and I'm giving it the respect it deserves as such. It has nothing to do with the beginning. It has to deal with the memories we have of things. hell 64 was part of the beginning of my gaming and is the basis for so many of the games we play today. Mario 64, Ocarina, they pioneered 3d gaming. By your definition they are old school because they started the kinds of games we play today. The correct term you need is classic. N64 is oldschool gaming. It is not classic gaming. Someday when the system changes again, like the 2d to 3d shift it might be classic. The changes as I can postulate them now are relegated to full VR(a ways off I hope, hell I never want to see full VR.) or hologrpahic interfaces like the monster chessboard in Star Wars, which won't work well for our speed based games.

I completely agree with Aminar on this.. Its all perspective... Next Gen moves up with each generation that comes out, and so does old school. I would count the N64 and PS as old school gaming systems.. they are almost 15 years old

But the generational gap isn't nearly as impressive its only 2 generations there is 7 generations yet. Some day I think it could be considered old school but right now I just don't believe it to be. Even if you did grow up with it.

Would you categorize the SNES as old school? I would, and it is only one generation away from the N64.

I do agree that the N64 isn't truly old school compared to other the 8, 16, and 32 bit eras...but after 15 years and 2 more generations it's close enough at this point.

Snes yes but I guess I'm also more reluctant to acknowledge it cause really I didn't like the system at all except for a couple games. for god sakes it had more handles on it than a person has hands. the controller was totally retarded.
