Panel Idea- Con Veterans

Postby 1stAgent on Wed May 06, 2009 4:51 pm

Since Name That Anime Opening will have already played at three cons by the time Daisho rolls around, I wanted to kick around an idea for a panel I'd like to submit. That way I'd feel more at ease giving NTAO a miss this year.

It's loosely based on the Convention After Hours panel many of the guests hosted at Ohayocon, Spike Spencer's audiobook of con stories, and possibly even all those con survival tips several conventions like to run. The idea is to have a panel of two or three con veterans, call it the Convention Veterans Association (or some other nifty title) and have at it. Most of the hour would be sharing some of our best convention stories and hearing some gems from the audience. But we could also delve into con tricks and advice, how various con experiences hold up (like talking about No Brand in its infancy), and that sort of thing. I don't know who else would be interested in joining me as a "veteran," but certainly KORfan, Kara Kuro and even GundamCowboy would be on the short list.

What are your thoughts?

Well I'm a congoer newborn, so to speak. My last/first con was No Brand a little over a week ago now. I'll admit it was the most fun I've had in a long time...hence why I'm here, lol. But yeah, I would definitely go to a panel like that (to watch :P ). I would suggest putting it somewhere near the beginning of the con, since it is an advice panel, and possibly try to put it in a spot where there really isn't anything "big" going on at the time...no offense, but it seems like one of those panels you don't plan on "I HAVE TO GO THERE" but more like "Well, we can go to this, that, or the other thing" and your panel would be chosen, because frankly, it sounds amusing :D.

None taken. It would definitely be one of those afternoon panels, although doing it on Friday isn't a bad idea.

My friend, you are one click away from a legendary panel:

GundamCowboy

Cheesus

Yeah, I don't think anyone could argue the amount of veteran experience on that list.

Here's an idea: maybe each year the CVA could vote in another couple of worthy members, and then induct them at the panel?

Yeah, totally up for it. I do have some hilarious stories to tell ^____^ And corrupting the new/young/semi-innocent has always been a specialty of mine!

I haven't quite reached "seasoned con vet" status quite yet, but I might be able to contribute a bit here and there.

Wow. Okay, safe to say this is definitely going to happen.

Since the audience will help contribute stories of their own, does anyone have any idea how many panelists would be ideal? Between my suggestions, Trae, Cheesus and Yushi (all of whom would be fantastic), that would be seven... which is too many. I was thinking three... maybe four. Five is right out.

(pulls out credentials)

I've been attending cons since 1994, working at them since 1996, and have been running my own since 2002.

Also, I'm loud. :P
