Spooner Sucks. There is no doubt about it. Everything about Spooner Sucks.
This town has absolutely nothing good about it anymore. You guys are in for reading a little bit so you know and I know you all may agree or disagree with the stuff but I'm telling you where I stand.
I think when I tried getting a lane reserved at the bowling alley today, it was the the straw that broke the camel's back. The guy doesn't run his bowling alley with good hours. It seems like he's closed on mondays, he doesn't open until 3:30 PM in the Summer on the days he is open. There is no nights where it isn't league. Non league bowling is only from 3:30-5:00 PM. And then On Sundays, he closes at 6 PM but stays open only when business picks up. I understand parts of the logic but it still pisses me off that i can't bowl at 8 at night.
Now the Movie theater in Spooner. I like watching Movies there and they theater does fine with matinees. But a lot of times the owner won't get movies I want to see. He chooses by his morals as a conservative Catholic. So Movies like Year One or the Hangover will never see the light day in this theater. I am very annoyed by this simply because I like R rated Comedies. The jokes are in my alley and they make me laugh. But to see all the comedies I want to see, Siren and Rice Lake are my place so there is gas used right there.
And now Wal-Mart. This town turned down Wal-Mart. Sure not everyone here will agree with me on this but god damnit this town needed Wal-Mart. I've noticed downtown Spooner is dead. Only the Movie Theater, Bars, and a few hobby stores exist. There are empty buildings with "For Sale" and "For Rent" signs on them. The Pamida that is in Spooner has barely an inventory so whatever I am looking for is most likely not in Pamida. There is gas used to go to Rice Lake, Hayward, Eau Claire, Superior/Duluth, or the Twin Cities. Had Wal-mart came maybe the north part of Spooner would've had some progress that it has been lacking.
Not only has Wal-Mart failed to save Spooner, 3M a while back tried going in there with a Plant. Spooner turned that down claiming they were a tourist town. Spooner has barely any tourism. There is a Train Museum but that's it. Sure there is a Rodeo but that isn't as good as it once was. Same with the County Fair. Spooner as made so many festivals that it has lost money being people don't know when to spend the money and when not too. There was the civic center that was added to attract conventions there was Sheep Convention when it came in and nothing more. Now that civic center is being focused on it's Hockey Arena inside. Hayward has more Tourism than Spooner but hayward is tourism because they have things to attract tourists. Yeah that's right the Rival is doing much better.
Oh yeah they added a store that sold wood stoves and slowly after that store came in, Spooner banned burning wood in town because the smell of wood burning wasn't pleasant.
So I guess it is clear that once economic times pick up, I clearly have to move away from that town. I know I have too. I bet this town is going to lead to a fate where no one will live there.
