Soda spill on laptop keyboard

Postby Neko Toast on Wed May 13, 2009 5:55 pm

So, I accidentally spilled some of my RC Cola on my laptop earlier (I'm on the PoS that is the family's desktop right now). The laptop itself still works fine, so the worst scenario didn't happen. The keyboard isn't functioning, though. Right now I have it off and unplugged upstairs in my room, with a fan blowing against it, for maximum dry-age.

Does anyone have any advice for a problem like this? What if, after it has dried, it still doesn't work?

I spilled soda on my keyboard once, it isn't a laptop though. I didn't stop working but to dry it off we got some Q-tips and Kleenex with like toothpicks to get it nice and dry in between the keys.

Pull the keys off, you can(should be able to) put them back on later. then clean it out with cutips.
Given that I would never live that down, I made a wisecrack instead. "Do you have a little white dress? I've had this deep-seated nurse fantasy about you, Murphy."

Looks like this is my only option. Unfortunately, the laptop keys are a little harder to reattach than normal keyboard keys. It took me a little while to put the space bar back on when I took it off.

If that fails, it's actually surprisingly easy to replace a lappy keyboard, just requires a bit of patience and finesse. Not to mention, it's usually pretty cheap to find on used on eBay since people break lappy's all the time and sell them as is with everything stripped out of them. It's also possible to get the part right from the manufacturer.

Well, turns out there's a little more to unattaching my keyboard than I had originally thought... luckily, my dad found a place that can fix it for me. I'm gonna drop it off there later.

So, according to my dad, who talked to them when he dropped it off at the shop, it's gonna take a week. Seems like a long time to clean/possibly replace a keyboard, but he said they also have to check the rest of the computer and make sure it isn't damaged.

In the meantime, I've been in my room, playing my Zelda games. They aren't proving to be as distracting as I'd hoped, though... They don't quite grab my attention like the used to. Except for OoT, that is.

Just to take Arador's side, and out of no malice I say this:

Believing Spittin' Wheelie was your second problem :P
I have to warn you, I am a bit odd...
Also, I don't know better than to leave myself logged in on April 1st.

So, here's the rundown of the past few weeks.

Computer is taken in. It takes the guy a week just to look at the damn thing because he had other computers to fix for previous clients. Understandable.

Once he looks at it, another week has to pass because he has to order a new keyboard. On top of that, it won't even be the same color (honestly, is a silver colored keyboard that hard to come by?). Slightly understandable, but quite annoying.

After two weeks total, the new keyboard is in and installed. But for some reason, the computer isn't working, after he said the keyboard was the only problem. Stress tests are needed over the weekend. This is getting ridiculous.

Jump to today, when the guy said it would be done for sure, turns out he takes a sick day.

If this doesn't get done by tomorrow, I'm going to have a few words with the repairman. After all, I have had no say at all in the matter, because my dad said he would 'take care of it'. I appreciate what he's doing for me, considering he's going to be paying for the fix, but if it's my computer, I should have some say in the matter. Like making the gorram keyboard match the gorram computer.

Oh, I've just gotten the icing on this crap-cake of a problem. It is supposedly 'fixed' now, if you can call it that. It turns out that the reason why it wasn't working on Friday was because a couple of keys popped lose while he was testing it.

...

Wow. I've waited just about 3 weeks for a gorram keyboard fix, it's going to cost 100+ dollars out of my parents wallet (I would have taken the charge myself if I was employed), and the keyboard doesn't even fit in the gorram computer.

When it gets here, and I start typing, and just one key pops out, I am going over there, having them take the keyboard out, asking for a refund, and taking my business elseware. I can easily get better service somewhere else.

Thats a pretty pathetic job for a repair, from what your telling us.

Are these guys like a actual store? Or is this a side job kind of rig?
